The Mission of Yellow Springs Senior Citizens, Inc. is to enhance the dignity and quality of life for seniors in Yellow Springs and Miami Township and to foster interaction among them with the total community. Visitors to the Yellow Springs Senior Center are quick to notice the diversity of our members and perceive the attributes we all share—our commitment to helping others, our desire to make a difference, the dedication with which we pursue our many interests and activities, our innovative spirit.

Since 1959, our organization has focused on serving the needs of people 55 and older in Yellow Springs and Miami Township. Located in its own building in the Yellow Springs business district, the Center is governed by a 9-member board of trustees elected by the membership. Staff includes a full-time director, three program managers and several part time staff who provide services and manage and oversee programs. Cherished volunteers, serving as drivers, class instructors, receptionists and more, provide more than 4600 hours of service per year in support of seniors in the community.

The services we provide to seniors include: classes (academic, languages, arts, exercise), transportation, homemaker services, insurance consultation, care information and referral, caregiver support and a variety of social events. With few exceptions, the services and activities at YSSC are available at no cost. Generous donations from the community provide about one third of the operating costs to keep YSSC and our members thriving. More information is available at ysseniors.org.

In recent years our programming has been an example for other senior centers, having presented these at the Ohio Association of Senior Centers, Age-Friendly Ohio network and for AARP’s Rural Labs: we provide free grocery shopping and delivery from our local, family-owned store; we have a literary journal “Ripples” published annually, and our Volunteer Medical Escort Program provides support during medical procedures or difficult times for people without family or friends to help.
